#InstaTideChallenge

Personally, I needed to make some changes that were going to be consistent with branding and posting in regards to my Instagram (@balerosphotography) for those of you who want to follow along with my Instagram feed.

The first thing that took place was the fact that I'm going to be posting on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7PM. I quite like spacing out my posts, but most importantly, I would like to reclaim my weekends from social media at any chance I can get. In addition, I usually shoot on weekends and don't have time to post aside from the occasional Instagram Story.

The other thing that changed was my name! When I joined Instagram back in 2012, I used the handle "rickandrewb", which was pretty consistent with everything else in my life. From Facebook to Twitter, it just seemed to fit that it'd be my name. Over the last year though my Instagram has seen a face lift from personal life to more of my photography work. I'm actually really proud of how it looks, but there was just a disconnect, to me, with it still being "rickandrewb". Much like the website, it got changed to "balerosphotography."

Ok, enough of that, this last week my normal posting was interrupted by an Instagram Challenge that was put on by Rising Tide Society. Wanting to interact with other creatives and just continue to build my social media presence as a photographer I decided that I was going to join in on it and I'm so glad I did because I got to do just the things I was hoping. In addition, I was looking for a way to introduce a little bit more about myself without blasting you guys with some selfies (not my brand, haha).

I wanted to share with you guys though the FIVE days worth of posts that I made as well as what the prompt was for that day. Apologies now for a long blog posts. Crucify me. (Joking!)

Monday: Introduction

Here are 5 random facts about me that you may have never known!

  1. Photography was a hobby growing up and it wasn't until recently that I decided to pursue it as a career. In fact, from the time I was 8 until I was 21 I wanted to go to Dental School to become an orthodontist.
  2. I'm left handed and when I was 16 I told a friend that I was going to write a book titled, "It just doesn't feel right." I'm still working on it.
  3. I Have a man crush on Michael Phelps and nothing is changing that anytime soon, haha.
  4. My nighttime routine is drink a glass of water, pee, and then brush my teeth. This comes from that fact that I used to wet the bed until I was 7.
  5. I grew up always wanting to be different from other people and I have parents who supported me through it all.

Tuesday: Morning Routine

I was a messy kid growing up. I found order in the chaos that I created, but somewhere down the line my own mess gave me really bad anxiety. Like to the point where I had a hard time functioning and getting things done. That being said, I love order and I love control, which is probably why I love running my own business, haha. With that, I always start my mornings in the silence of my office space getting things ready that I need before a full day of work.

Wednesday: Creative Work

"Take a risk. Dare to be different. Make it worth it."

Chances are this isn't an original quote, but it's something I've spent the last year saying to myself every time I dive into a photography project. It's challenged me to always do and produce work that I know I'm going to love because I stayed true to myself in that I took a risk, embraced being different, and in the end making it worth it. The reality is, a year ago you wouldn't have gotten me to take a photo like this because I spent most of 2015 playing it safe. Doing what I saw and tried mimicking it. I've honestly found that I love my work though because I've challenged myself to push my boundaries. Get out there and push your limits.

Thursday: Your Heart

When I'm not creating or shooting, I find solace in many of the things I'm passionate about. From working out to reading, one of the very important parts of my life that I feed time and energy into is my faith life. I said, "Yes and Amen" when I was 17 on April 9th 2008. It's been quite a journey that has had its fair share of ups and downs, but it's been worth it every step of the way.

Friday: Inspiration

I have a ton of creative people in my life who inspire me, from far across the country to being local. The thing is, while they inspire me, they don't quite inspire me the way that my parents do. My parents came to the US from the Philippines simply to provide a life that was better than theirs for my older brother and me. I grew up seeing them sacrifice more than what made them comfortable all for me to be happy with who I am now, do the things I do, and accomplish the things I've accomplished. I love them to death. They've held my hand in some of the darkest moments in my life and on the flip side they've cheered far too loud on the sidelines of any of my life accomplishments. I'm proud to call them my parents even if I don't always show it. I just hope that one day I can be as self-less, loving, supportive, and creative as they've been to me. Thanks mom & dad.

PS. Thanks for my first camera and my sense of adventure.
